Letter to the Editor: Penn State Abuse Case Just the Tip of the Iceberg

According to the Victim Services Center of Montgomery County, despite the recent attention child sexual abuse cases involving the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Penn State are getting, many children still suffer in silence.

The recent and bring to the forefront the ugly truth about child abuse in our community. These cases reveal just the tip of the iceberg. There are many children who continue to suffer in silence at the hands of people they know and trust. 

(VSC) provides child abuse treatment services that help over 250 children and their non-offending parents cope with the effects of child abuse each year. Abused children may experience emotional, behavioral and developmental problems as well as suicidal ideations.  If left untreated, abused children could suffer severe long term effects.

All VSC services are free to victims and their non-offending family members. 

Now more than ever it is imperative that we protect children from the real danger of child abuse. All adults must report suspected child abuse immediately and stop the culture of silence. VSC’s Child Abuse Prevention Programs provide training to community members, professionals, schools and colleges on child abuse and violence prevention.
