Local boy scouts earn awards

Patch visits a troop at Woodland Elementary School

Seven first-grade boys filed into the room, one at a time, most with parents in tow. Tonight was a big night for them. They not only had a special guest to hear from, but also were being presented with new awards.

The 6- and 7-year-olds are members of the Tiger Cub Scouts, which meets at Woodland Elementary School in Audubon. The scouts work on various elective "belt loops," similar to badges of honor, to show off their skill set and hard work. On Thursday night, the scouts were presented their recently earned loops in a short ceremony at the school's LGI Room.

During the night's events, the scouts also got to learn more about the media. Regional Editor Melissa Treacy presented a short informational session about Patch.com and its free, local online news resources. Instead of visiting a live newsroom, the newsroom came to them.
