Local Girl Scouts Attend Philly-Based Science and Technology Camp

Girl Scouts from the Norristown area recently attended Science, Technology, Engineering and Math camp at Philadelphia University.

For the third consecutive year, Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP) gave its young members the opportunity to experience the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) at summer camp at Philadelphia University.

Through a unique partnership between GSEP, the University, the United States Navy, the Philadelphia and Norristown Area School Districts, the focus of STEM camp is to foster a new generation of scientists, mathematicians, engineers and technologists.

On July 20, participating Girl Scouts were honored during a closing ceremony at the Navy Yard.

"We choose to bring the Girl Scouts here at a younger age so that they can learn the importance of getting a good education in math and science if they are indeed interested in pursuing those fields," said Dr. Fernando Tovia, a camp mentor and Associate Professor and Industrial and Systems Engineering Program Coordinator at the School of Engineering and Textiles at Philadelphia University. "If they realize this passion in high school, it may be too late for them to pursue the field as a career."
