Montgomery County Tax Coalition recruiting volunteers for upcoming tax season
A county-wide effort is underway to encourage volunteers to receive free Internal Revenue Service training to become certified tax preparers
Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, volunteer tax preparers in Montgomery County were able to return nearly $3.5 million in refunds to area families just last year according to a release issued by the Montgomery County Tax Coalition (MCTC). In order to promote this service and reach a larger client base, the MCTC is looking for more volunteers who are committed to returning money in to the hands of the community.
"The last couple of years have been awful for me financially, as they have been for many others. Being able to save a few hundred dollars on getting my taxes done has really helped this year and last. My tax preparer has been incredibly nice both years," said a 2009 VITA client.
With no prior accounting experience necessary, volunteers become IRS-certified for free and develop marketable job skills, help those who could most benefit, gain volunteer experience, learn a new skill, build a solid résumé and earn recommendations for work or school.
