One Hot Zoo

From Woodland to Elmwood, animals are fun in any kind of weather!

The temperature may have been soaring toward triple digits on Thursday, but that didn't stop local elementary schoolers from having some fun. Students from the kindergarten classes at Woodland Elementary School in Trooper enjoyed a day with the animal kingdom at Elmwood Park Zoo.

During their trip, students got to beat the heat with a lesson in the air-conditioned education center. There, they were able to learn more about their five senses, most of which they share with the zoo's animals.

The 5- and 6-year-old students enjoyed the presentation, including a colorful dancing bird, a slithering snake and an oversized fluffy bunny.

After a quick lesson, they were off to explore all the zoo had to offer. Some of the favorite hot spots (Sure, today they were all "hot.") included the Prairie Dog tunnels and the bison, who were trying to also find ways to stay cool.

Many gravitated to the misting station for a quick shower, just like the animals were getting, and, of course, the play areas. By 2:35 p.m., the crews filed back onto the school buses and headed for home.

The field trip was chaperoned by volunteer parents, but would never have been possible without Mrs. Geiss and Mrs. Daciw, the school's kindergarten teachers.

Despite skyrocketing temperatures, the students from Woodland played it cool with their animal friends.
