Potential Transformer Fire at Verizon Switch Facility
Norristown and Plymouth fire departments responded to reports of a smoking transformer at the Verizon facility at DeKalb and Penn streets.
Shortly after noon today, Norristown Fire Department responded to a call for a piece of equipment on fire at the Verizon switching facility at DeKalb and Penn streets. They were soon joined by Plymouth Fire Department and PECO technicians.
Upon entering the building, firefighters discovered a smoking transformer on the premises. PECO technicians were called in to secure the transformer while firefighters checked the building and secured the scene. No one was injured and the building did not sustain any notable damage.
DeKalb Street was reduced to one lane of traffic during the lunch hour and Penn Street was closed between Green and DeKalb, causing delays. Traffic had already been affected in the area by PECO workers who closed Arch Street to lay new gas lines between Airy and Penn streets.
