PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Sixers have signed star small forward and guard Paul George to a $212 million, four-year contract, bringing a third star to the Joel Embiid-Tyrese Maxey tandem in their ongoing attempt to win an NBA championship.

The news was first reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The massive extension brings one of the best players in the NBA to Philly. George, 34, is a nine-time All Star who has spent the last five years with the Los Angeles Clippers, a franchise that has been similarly frustrated in its attempts to make deep postseason runs. He finished third in MVP voting in 2018.

Almost immediately after the George deal was announced, the Sixers signed emergent franchise cornerstone Maxey to a five-year, $204 million extension, The Athletic's Shams Charania reported, locking up the trio of Maxey, George, and Embiid into the future.

George was ranked as the 23rd best player in the NBA by The Ringer in a listing that placed Embiid 6th and Maxey 31st.

The massive spending comes after the Sixers fell in the first round of the playoffs to the New York Knicks, with Embiid at half strength in return from an injury and an insufficient supporting cast beyond Maxey and Tobias Harris.

The Sixers also lost Harris is the flurry of early free agency moves Monday, as he reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with the Detroit Pistons.

George is the latest in a long line of pieces the Sixers have sought to support Embiid in their pursuit of an NBA title. Previous stars Ben Simmons, Jimmy Butler, and James Harden all came through Philly with varying degrees of successful meshing with Embiid, though the latter two did not stick around for as long as Philly has now signed George.
