Charges Filed After Body Found Stuffed In Trashcan In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA — A 61-year-old man has been charged with murder and more crimes after police said he killed a woman then stuffed her body in a garbage can last month in Philadelphia.

The body was found at about 9:42 a.m. Jan. 30 on the 700 block of North 7th Street.

The victim's age and gender were not identifiable at the time, but authorities Wednesday said it was that of 54-year-old Deborah Leatherberry from the 6100 block of Wheeler Street. She had died from a gunshot to her left temple, police said.

An investigation revealed the suspect to be Ricardo Ponds, 61, from the 400 block of Lancaster Avenue.

Ponds was taken into custody without incident by SEPTA officers at 15th and Market Wednesday evening, police said.
