Charges Filed In Philly Man's 2023 Kidnapping, Subsequent Death: Feds

Authorities said Wey Um, 48, died after being kidnapped in March 2023. Tyheem Tyler is charged in connection with his abduction and death.

PHILADELPHIA — Nearly two years after the kidnapping of a Philadelphia bartender, a man has been charged in connection with his abduction and subsequent death, federal authorities said.

Wey Um, 48, was abducted at about 2:11 a.m. on the 900 block of East Godfrey Avenue on March 31, 2023.

Now, United States Attorney David Metcalf said Tyheem Tyler, 34, of Philadelphia, was arrested and charged by indictment with conspiracy to commit kidnapping, kidnapping resulting in death, and aiding and abetting.

The indictment alleges Tyler went to Um’s place of business in Philadelphia, then robbed Um at gunpoint, on March 6, 2023.

Then on March 31, 2024, Tyler and others drove a Ford Explorer SUV to Um’s Philadelphia home, kidnapped him outside the home, then at about 2:12 a.m., drove Um in the Ford Explorer to a location near the Delaware River in Philadelphia, according to authorities.

Authorities said Tyler is complicit in Um's kidnapping and holding for ransom that led to his death.

Tyler is accused of using means, facilities, and instrumentalities of interstate commerce in doing so, authorities said.

Tyler faces a maximum possible sentence of life imprisonment or death.
