Here are the top stories today in Philadelphia:
- The trial is underway for Gilbert Newton III, a Philadelphia man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend during a knife attack at the Meadowbrook train station in Abington. The trial is expected to last five days. Newton faces first- and third-degree murder charges. He is accused of attacking and killing 18-year-old Morgan McCaffrey at the Meadowbrook train station on July 27, 2020. (CBS Philly)
- Governor Tom Wolf is calling for the resignation of fellow Democrat state Representative Kevin Boyle, who was arrested over the weekend and charged with harassment and violating a protection from abuse order filed by his wife. Boyle, 41, represents Philadelphia and parts of Montgomery County. He was taken into custody in Philadelphia shortly before 3 p.m. and was released Saturday morning on his own recognizance. - Nearly $5 million in federal aid has been approved for Pennsylvania residents affected by the remnants of Hurricane Ida, and there is still time to apply for financial assistance. Homeowners and businesses have until Nov. 10th to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to get connected with grants and low-interest loans to cover the costs of the storm, which brought devastating flooding and several tornadoes to the Philadelphia region. - Philadelphia reached a grim milestone last weekend. There have now been more than 400 homicides so far in 2021. As of Monday, Philadelphia has lost 404 people to homicides this year. Mayor Jim Kenney and District Attorney Larry Krasner reacted to surpassing 400 homicides for the second straight year on Monday. (CBS Philly)
- The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) has announced the location, dates, and theme for its highly anticipated 2022 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show. “In Full Bloom” will take place in South Philadelphia’s Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park from Saturday, June 11 through Sunday, June 19, 2022. In its second year hosting The Flower Show at FDR Park, PHS plans upgrades and enhancements based on feedback from guests, staff, and stakeholders (wooderice.com)
