Here are the top stories in Philadelphia today:
- Police have charged the gunman who killed a co-worker at Jefferson Hospital and then shot two police officers with murder and other charges after the shooting spree. Stacey Hayes, 55, was charged Tuesday with Murder, Attempted Criminal Homicide, Aggravated Assault, Assault on Law Enforcement, carrying a firearm on the streets of Philadelphia and other, related offenses. He was shot by police officers after shooting at and wounding two of them. He is still hospitalized, but the police officers are recovering. (NBC 10 Philadelphia)
- According to new numbers released by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, 85.2 percent of Philadelphia adults have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. The total number of fully vaccinated Philadelphians is now at least 937,259, and the number of Philadelphians with at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine is at least 1,142,486, as of Tuesday. Health officials also reported that 205 patients with COVID-19 are currently being treated in Philadelphia hospitals, with a total of 31 on ventilators. (Metro US)
- A man died Monday afternoon after being shot twice in West Philadelphia. Officers rushed the victim, described as in his 30s or 40s, to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center after he was shot in the neck and shoulder just before 2 p.m. on the 100 block of S. 45th Street. He was pronounced dead. (Metro US)
- Philly Music Fest is returning to the live, in-person festival format this year. Celebrating its fifth year, Philly Music Fest is a yearly music festival known for exclusively booking Philly-based acts or acts with strong connections to the city. Philly Music Fest was founded by Jenn and Greg Seltzer in 2017. The festival’s mission is to host a music festival celebrating and featuring Philadelphia musicians. (AL DIA News)
- As part of Fire Prevention Week in the city, the Philadelphia Fire Department is putting out a call that there are free smoke detectors available. The city has also received a big grant to help save lives in the future. Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel said $400,000 in federal funding had been given to the city to purchase about 20,000 smoke detectors and 250 adaptive smoke detectors to be installed in homes of people who cannot afford them.
