Here are the top stories in Philadelphia today:

  1. Philadelphia public health officials don’t plan to take punitive action against the owners of a construction waste processing facility for a fire that blanketed much of the city in smoke last week. The fire at Delaware Valley Recycling, Inc. that sent smoke across the city last Tuesday is considered an “emergency incident,” said Sarah Peterson, deputy communications director in the Mayor’s office. However, Air Management Services, a division of the city’s Department of Public Health, does not issue notices of violation for such incidents. (WHYY)
  2. An arrest has been made in the killing of a Philadelphia check cashing business owner gunned down inside her Ogontz neighborhood store earlier this week. Robert Jiles, 64, followed Aruna Mittal into her store on Old York Road and gunned her down on Tuesday. Jiles has been charged with homicide, robbery, and a number of firearms-related charges. 3. A Philadelphia man was armed with a loaded handgun when he was caught moments before potentially attempting a burglary in Mercer County, authorities said. Stephen Rossiter, 43, was seen carrying a pair of bolt cutters and walking toward the backyard of a home in Princeton, New Jersey just after 1 p.m. Wednesday, police said. Officers followed Rossiter, citing “recent vehicle thefts, vehicle burglaries and thefts of catalytic converters in the area,” and approached him for questioning. (Northern Highlands Daily Voice)
  4. A Philadelphia priest who is accused of abusing a teen at Cardinal Dougherty High School in the 1980s also took the boy on a trip to Margate, where he served him alcohol and assaulted him, according to a lawsuit filed in Atlantic County Superior Court. The Rev. Peter Foley allegedly assaulted the boy, then 16, on a trip to the shore in 1981 and also at the school, where they worked together on student council, the suit says. Foley, now 83, claims he never abused the teen — or anyone else — although he acknowledged he had given the boy alcohol. (Press of Atlantic City)
  5. A vegan ice cream shop owner is aiming to impact Philadelphia, one scoop at a time. During the pandemic shutdowns, Michelle Alcaraz of A Love Supreme Vegan Cream drove her van around Philadelphia, delivering seven flavors of vegan "ice cream" to customers. Her products are now sold online and through partnerships with local businesses, including High Point Café, which sells A Love Supreme Vegan Cream at its location in Mt. Airy. (WPVI-TV)
