In Pennsylvania, it was San Lucas Pizzeria in South Philadelphia that got the shoutout by Times writer Regan Stephens.

Located at 2000 S Bouvier St. in Philadelphia, San Lucas opened in 2005 and is owned by Valentin Palillero and his wife Eva Mendez.

Stephens wrote that while the sold traditional pies with traditional toppings, Palillero wanted to infuse some of his own Peublan cultural cuisine into the pies.

"Using the same simple crust as a base, new recipes used ingredients found in Mexican cuisine: slightly smoky guajillo sauce, spiced pork, black beans, flecks of onion and chopped cilantro," Stephens wrote. "Nowadays, these varieties, served with a side of lime wedges, are as popular as the originals. But they're also a vivid link in a neighborhood that’s been an epicenter of Italian and Mexican immigration, roughly three-quarters of a century apart."

San Lucas Pizzeria offers online ordering for pickup and delivery, and features daily specials, such as a large cheese pie with 10 buffalo wings for just $27.
