Pennsylvania Winter: Four Questions To Ask Your Plumber
Be sure to find the right pro for the job this winter.

The Farmers' Almanac is predicting "snow-verload" in Pennsylvania this winter, and stormy conditions can spell issues for your plumbing system. Common winter problems include frozen pipes, water heater failure, clogged drains, water line leaks and septic tank bursts.
Thankfully, our state is full of highly rated professional plumbers for the job. Ask these four questions to be sure your pro is qualified and offering the best value for your needs.
What kind of license do you have, and may I see it?
It may sound obvious, but an unlicensed, unregistered or uninsured professional can make costly and timely mistakes. It's a smart and easy step to ask for a professional's license. (You can look up what's required by your state.) Then, ask if they have received a certification or updated training through a professional association. This isn't required, but it might help make your decision between candidates.

Do you have references?
Credible pros will be able to offer references from past customers to verify their work. When you speak to them, ask if they were happy with the project, if it was completed on time, if there were any unexpected expenses, and if they would use them again.
Have you executed this kind of job in the past?
Most plumbers are experienced with minor fixture or appliance installations, leak repairs and clogged drains. For larger jobs, it is wise to ask if your pro has the knowledge and experience needed for your project. Ask if they can offer examples of similar jobs in size and scope.

Do you belong to any trade unions?
Trade unions ensure professionals meet minimum standards of practice and education. They also often provide insurance and offer ongoing training courses and certifications.
Can I have an estimate in writing?
Be sure to cover yourself by getting your estimate in writing. Also, ask your pro to specify if it is a firm estimate, cap or just a ballpark figure.
How do you expect payment?
You should know upfront how your plumbing professional expects to be paid. For large jobs, most pros charge by milestones. For smaller gigs, they may ask for payment upon completion of a task. Never work with a pro who requires upfront payment.
