Philadelphia Gyms Open For First Time Since Coronavirus Closures

Health officials in the city said anyone who finds exercising with a mask difficult should not go to gyms as they could shut it down.

PHILADELPHIA — After months of being closed, gyms and fitness centers in Philadelphia are open again. But there are some strict regulations and guidelines gym goers needs to know before getting back into their fitness routines.

Health officials last week listed some new rules gyms will be following to keep patrons safe.

Gyms will be required to have everyone in the building masked and maintain a six-foot distance while inside.

All fitness classes will be required to have fewer than 10 people, and outdoor exercise is encouraged.

Health Department staff will be conducting proactive inspections, as well as inspections in response to complaints, at gyms in the city. These inspections will be unscheduled and unannounced.

City officials said that if people are not masked during an inspection, the gym will be closed.

Additionally, gyms experiencing spread of coronavirus will be closed.

Gym goers are recommended to not visit gyms if they find exercising with a mask difficult.

"Your actions could shut down the entire gym," officials said last week.
