Philly Officer Shot Serving Search Warrant Wednesday, Officials Say

The bullet hit the officer's ballistics vest and ricocheted into his hand, authorities added.

PHILADELPHIA — A police officer's ballistics vest may have saved his life Wednesday morning as he was wounded while serving a warrant in North Philadelphia, officials said.

Narcotics officers were serving a search warrant in the 1300 block of Kings Place around 6 a.m. when a shot came from inside the home, police officials said. The officer sustained a graze wound to the right hand when a bullet ricocheted off of his bulletproof vest, authorities said.

The officer, a 33-year veteran of the department, was transported to Jefferson Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said two people surrendered to police.

This is the second incident in five days where a Philly police officer has been injured in the line of duty. On Friday, Jan. 26, an officer was shot in the leg during a scuffle in a corner store, and his partner shot and killed the suspect.
