Here are the top stories today in Philadelphia:
- Philadelphia’s Department of Parks and Recreation is expanding curfew hours at more than a half-dozen parks, effective Dec. 1. The public parks will be closed daily from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. to keep people safe while deer control activities are underway. The curfew will be in effect at Bartram’s Garden, Cobbs Creek Park, East and West Fairmount Park, FDR Park, Poquessing Creek Park, Pennypack Park, Tacony Creek Park, and Wissahickon Valley Park. Trails, parking lots, and other areas in these parks will be closed to all pedestrian, bicycle, equestrian, and vehicular traffic. (WHYY)
- The gates of Eastern State Penitentiary are open to show people what life was like for prisoners years ago, but an important part of what they do now is connecting people to those that are currently incarcerated. One way they do this is by hosting their annual toy drive to benefit children whose parents were recently or are still incarcerated. Those who donate a toy can receive a "buy one get one" daytime tour admission ticket. (FOX 29 Philadelphia)
- A Saturday evening shooting has left a 17-year-old boy in “extremely critical condition,” according to Philadelphia police. The shooting happened in the 1200 block of North 50th Street around 5:47 p.m. No arrest has been made. (CBS Philly)
- Philadelphia 76ers point guard Tyrese Maxey surprised several high schoolers on Friday morning at the YSI Crittenton Family Support Center in the city's Germantown section. The organization provides resources for families in need in North and Northwest Philadelphia. The NBA star spoke from the heart to students who kept pushing through with school during the pandemic while also being challenged with other life obstacles, including gun violence and homelessness.
