Plane Crashes In Northeast Philly, Causing 'Massive Explosion'

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A small plane crashed Friday evening in Northeast Philadelphia near the Roosevelt Mall, causing a "massive explosion" and fires, according to sources. The crash was reported after 6 p.m. near Cottman and Bustelton Avenues, the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management confirmed via social media.

Video from the scene shows debris, smoke and fire throughout the area. Another video shows an aerial view of the aftermath.

"Multiple" casualties were reported, according to Action News, which also said the plane "possibly hit several buildings and cars in the area."

NBC10 reported the crash caused a "massive explosion."

The Office of Emergency Management said roads are closed in the area, including parts of Roosevelt Boulevard.

The Learjet 55 crashed after leaving Northeast Philadelphia Airport, NBC10 reported, noting there were at least six people on the plane en route to Missouri. Action News reported the plane was on a medical assignment, and a pediatric patient was onboard.

Officials are asking people to avoid the area.

Gov. Shapiro said his office is in communication with Philadelphia officials regarding the crash.

Weather conditions were rainy in Philadelphia at the time of the crash.
