Guman Dead After Police Officer Shot In Philadelphia

A man who shot a Philadelphia Police officer, whose bulletproof vest is credited with saving his life, died after other police fired back.

PHILADELPHIA — The person who shot a Philadelphia Police officer Thursday has died after police returned fire at him.

According to police, officers encountered a man running in traffic at about 12:24 p.m. Thursday.

The man voluntarily submitted to police as he was experiencing a mental health issue, police said.

A police vehicle arrived to take the man to Friends Hospital on the 4600 block of East Roosevelt Boulevard.

There, the man got out of the vehicle and officers directed him where to go, then the man suddenly attacked the officers, according to authorities.

A "significant battle" then occurred, resulting in officers on the ground and the man trying to take their weapons, police said.

Officers used a taser on the man, but it was unsuccessful, and the man was able to get one of the officers' weapons, according to police.

A shootout then broke out, with police and the man firing weapons at each other, police said.

One of the officers was hit in his vest and the bullet was repelled.

The man was shot multiple times and taken to Einstein Hospital, where he died, authorities said.

Two officers, including the one who was shot, were taken to Temple University Hospital and will be released Thursday, according to police.

The officer who was shot is 30 years old and has been on the force for six years.

Police said more information will likely be released as the investigation continues.
