Here are the top stories in Philadelphia today:
- SEPTA's unionized workers Sunday voted to strike if a new contract isn't met by the end of this weekend. If workers walk off, riders should know important transportation details. The Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 234 vote means about 5,000 workers will strike on Nov. 1 if there is no agreement. A strike would affect nearly all SEPTA transit options. (Philadelphia Patch)
- A Philadelphia Police officer has been charged with assault and related crimes after getting into a fight and dropping his gun during the fight. Police Officer Joseph Marion was arrested by the Philadelphia Police Department's Internal Affairs Division on Oct. 20 after to an investigation into an assault that occurred on Sunday, April 18. During a physical altercation that date, Marion punched a male in the mouth with a closed fist. (Philadelphia Patch)
- Police in Philadelphia are searching for a suspect wanted in the attempted abduction of a young child. The incident happened at approximately 12 p.m. on October 17 on the 2300 block of North 11th Street. In a video released by authorities, the child is seen walking hand-in-hand with his mother when the suspect approaches. (FOX 29 Philadelphia)
- Spending in the race for an open seat on Pennsylvania's state Supreme Court has blown past $5 million, according to new campaign finance reports, with less than two weeks left until Election Day. Reports filed with the state Friday show that most of it, or roughly $3 million, has been spent to help Republican Kevin Brobson, including spending by third-party groups in the race. That compared with about $2 million to help Democrat Maria McLaughlin through last Monday. (NBC 10 Philadelphia)
- Hilco Redevelopment Partners, the company handling the cleanup of the 2019 Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery explosion, has unveiled a key piece of its long-term vision for the 1,300-acre industrial property. The developer said Monday that the site will be a future hub for logistics, e-commerce and life sciences called The Bellwether District. Hilco officials estimate that the site, which encompasses roughly 2% of Philadelphia's landmass, will generate as many as 19,000 jobs in Southwest Philadelphia over the next 15 years.
