- Four people were shot in a drive-by Thursday morning as Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf spoke in West Philadelphia to urge community-based violence prevention groups to apply for millions of dollars in grants. Police say the occupants of a gold or tan-colored Jeep opened fire around 11 a.m. at the intersection of 38th and Aspen streets. No arrests have been made at this time. (NBC 10 Philadelphia)
- Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration became so concerned about how three cases of neglect or abuse of older people were handled in Philadelphia that it is ordering improvements at an agency there, though officials are refusing to disclose what happened to those three people, or whether they are alive. The August 6th letter by Wolf's Department of Aging secretary, Robert Torres, came weeks after staff at the state agency began raising alarms, including that caseworkers' caseloads were above the limit in state law. Torres' letter went to the president of the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, a nonprofit with a state contract to field and respond to calls about elder abuse and neglect in the city. - A Center City Wawa store sold a Pennsylvania Lottery ticket that's good for $2 million.
According to the Pennsylvania Lottery, the Wawa at 1707 Arch St. in Philadelphia sold a winning Powerball with Power Play ticket. The ticket matched five of the five white balls drawn, 20-40-47-55-63, on Wednesday but not the red Powerball 5 to win $2 million, (Philadelphia Patch) - Most people who live in the Greater Philadelphia area probably know of Eastern State Penitentiary’s existence thanks to the 19th-century prison’s highly publicized and highly successful Terror Behind the Walls annual haunted house. When Terror Behind the Walls didn’t return last season due to COVID-19, absolutely no one was surprised. But it turns out the penitentiary has decided it’s done with the organization’s biggest moneymaker once and for all. (Philadelphia magazine)
- The man wanted for a shooting on I-95 turned himself into Pennsylvania State Police in Media on Wednesday morning. According to police, Zion Blyden, 21, faces attempted homicide, aggravated assault, and other charges in connection with the September 12 incident.
A female driver notified police that Blyden was shooting at her vehicle while she was driving on northbound I-95 near Highland Avenue in Chester. (WPVI-TV)
