Student Charged After Bringing Gun To School: Philadelphia Police

Philadelphia Police said a student at Northeast High School was found with a loaded 9mm firearm in his backpack Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA — A Northeast High School student was caught with a gun in his bag at school Wednesday, Philadelphia Police said.

According to police, when Tawhiid Miles went to school, located at 1601 Cottman Ave., Wednesday morning, he placed his backpack on the x-ray machine at an entrance.

A School Safety Officer saw the silhouette of what appeared to be a handgun inside the bag and immediately notified his partner and requested help, police said.

The officer searched Miles's bag and found a black and tan 9mm ghost gun in side it, police said.

The firearm was secured, Miles was escorted to the school's holding cell, and Philadelphia Police were then notified.

Police officers arrived and were directed to the recovered firearm.

Authorities said the gun was loaded with six live 9mm round in the magazine and one in the chamber.

Miles, was taken into custody without incident and was charged with violations of the uniform firearms act, possession of a weapon on school property, and violations of the uniform firearms act on public streets.
