Here are the top stories today in Philadelphia:

  1. Philadelphia School District Superintendent Dr. William Hite announced on Monday night that he will not renew his contract at the end of the 2021-22 school year. He will remain in his role as superintendent until the end of his contract on Aug. 31, 2022. Hite came to Philadelphia in June 2012 from Prince George's Public Schools, Maryland's second-largest school district, where he was also superintendent. (WPVI-TV)
  2. A Philadelphia man has been arrested and charged by Montgomery County authorities with selling opiates to a patient at Einstein Hospital. Over the summer, he snuck the drugs into the healthcare facility by concealing them inside a Pringles potato chip container. The Montgomery County District Attorney's office has lodged multiple felony counts of possession with intent to deliver and other charges against Jeremiah Harris. (Philadelphia Patch)
  3. Philadelphia’s popular Puerto Rican Day Parade, which drew thousands to the Ben Franklin Parkway each September and was broadcast to an audience of nearly 100,000 viewers, was canceled for a second year in a row over COVID-19 concerns. There were several small-scale events designed to foster solidarity across the city, but members of Philly’s Latino community felt its absence. The city did grant a permit for the parade, but there were worries about community spread at the host of unofficial events that are usually held at the parade’s end. (Billy Penn)
  4. On Monday, Oct. 4, local government and business leaders will kick off the 37th Annual Philadelphia Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week at the Laborers' District Council Training and Learning Center from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Every year, MED Week highlights minority businesses and the resources that help them grow. Throughout the week, organizations from across the region will host events focused around this year's theme, "Unmute Your Opportunities." (Press Release Desk)
  5. The City of Philadelphia announced on Tuesday that PHLDonateTech will continue for another year. The citywide initiative calls on residents and businesses to donate devices—particularly laptops and computers—so that they can be refurbished and distributed to residents in need across Philadelphia.
