Here are the top stories in Philadelphia today:

  1. The U.S. Supreme Court decided Wednesday it will not review a nonprofit group’s effort to open a supervised injection site in Philadelphia to try to reduce overdose deaths. The high court’s decision in the widely watched test case is a setback for the two dozen U.S. states and cities that supported the petition. A divided U.S. appeals court had rejected the Safehouse plan in January. Organizers of the Safehouse project say federal β€œcrackhouse” laws enacted are not intended to criminalize medically supervised centers. (CBS Philly)
  2. Philadelphia police officials pointed to the seemingly infinite supply of guns available in the city as a significant factor in the local government’s failure to stem violence. The goal of the hearing was to lower the murder rate in the city. The homicide count this year is 15% higher than last year and shooting victims are up 10% (WHYY)
  3. Philadelphia health officials will not extend the deadline for health care workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19. All hospital workers and long-term care facility employees must have at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine or present a medical or religious exemption by Friday. The mandate also applies to college staffers, faculty and students. (PhillyVoice.com)
  4. The Rothman Orthopaedic Institute Ice Rink is making its annual return to Center City Philadelphia's Dilworth Park this November. Dilworth Park's winter season will begin on Monday, Nov. 1 with the opening of the Wintergarden on the Greenfield Lawn. Then at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 5, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will mark the grand opening of the Ice Rink and Cabin. (Philadelphia Patch)
  5. Philadelphia City Council on Thursday overwhelmingly passed a bill that bars police from stopping drivers solely for committing minor traffic violations like having a broken brake light.
The measure, approved with a 14-2 vote, is rooted in recent data that show Philadelphia police pull over a disproportionate number of Black drivers for minor traffic violations compared to white and Latino drivers. According to the same data, only a small percentage of these stops result in an officer confiscating any kind of contraband, including illegal guns. (WHYY)
