Election 2023: Chester County Sheriff Fredda Maddox Runs For Judge

Maddox has experience as a public defender, community advocate and law enforcement officer.

WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County Sheriff Fredda Maddox, an attorney with years of experience working in the court system as a lawyer and law enforcement officer, announces her candidacy for a judgeship.

There are five vacancies on the 15-judge bench serving the residents of Chester County.

So far, eight candidates have announced that they are running for a 10-year term as judge. Judges earn an annual salary of $197,119.

“A lifetime of public service has given me a unique perspective on our judicial system,” Maddox said, when announcing her decision to run.

Maddox said her experience provides her with a concern for public safety, a commitment to justice and fairness, and respect for law enforcement.

Maddox, a Democrat, was elected in 2019 to serve as sheriff of Chester County. The job involves supervising 72 employees, including 60 deputy sheriffs and 12 administrative staffers who work in three buildings. She manages a $6.2 million budget and oversees safety plans for county buildings.

Maddox earned a law degree at Widener University School of Law, a master's of science in criminal justice at West Chester University, and a bachelor's of science in criminal justice at Edinboro State University.

Experience

Maddox began her legal career as a law clerk for Philadelphia Judge M. Teresa Sarmina. She also served as an assistant public defender for more than a decade, providing legal counsel to those who could not afford an attorney.

As an attorney, she advocated for survivors of domestic violence through the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County, protected the rights of children as a guardian ad litem, and represented private clients as an associate with Rovito Law LLC, West Chester.

Community Service

Maddox is a member of Chester County’s Criminal Justice Advisory Board and Chester County Prison Board.

She also served on the Chester County Women’s Commission, Birmingham Township Zoning Hearing Board and West Chester Public Library Board of Trustees.

“These positions have given me both broad and close-up views of the many facets of our justice system,” Maddox said. "This perspective would be an asset to the court.”
