Lock 60 Canal To Celebrate 200th Anniversary

It's been two centuries since the iconic structure was built on the Schuylkill River.

PHOENIXVILLE, PA — A special celebration will be held this weekend in honor of Lock 60, part of Schuylkill Canal Park and part of the historic Schuylkill Navigation System.

The park will hold an open house on Saturday, May 17 from noon to 3 p.m. to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Lock, which was completed this weekend in 1825.

Lock 60 was one of 71 locks built along 108 miles of the Schuylkill River as part of the navigation system, which spread through five counties and featured 32 dams and 27 canals. It's recognized today as one of the earliest, and most important, transportation improvement projects in the United States.
