Drunken Man Runs Over Curb, Hands Officer Credit Card, Police Say

Police were following the car in a marked vehicle.

A Perkiomenville man was arrested for DUI on Feb. 16 after allegedly swerving between lanes and running into a curb while being followed by a marked police car, according to Whitemarsh Township Police.

According to police, Derek Burney, 45, was traveling northbound in a Pontiac on Bethlehem Pike in the Flourtown section of Whitemarsh Township when he was seen by police, in a marked police car, to be swerving between northbound and southbound lanes several times, almost striking a stone wall at one point.

Police then followed Burney and say he attempted to make a left turn from Bethlehem Pike onto Skippack Pike and missed it. In the process, he crossed into oncoming traffic and ran into the curb near MaGerks Pub.

When police pulled the vehicle over, Burney was allegedly unable to get his license out of his wallet and instead handed police a credit card, police said.

Burney failed several field sobriety tests, and eventually consented to a blood draw. Charges are pending blood results.
