Grandson Impersonator Tricked Lafayette Hill Woman, Police Say

A Crescent Avenue woman was told her grandson was facing a court case and she needed to send money, according to police.

 

Whitemarsh Township Police are investigating a potential scam, after a woman reported that man impersonating her grandson said he was in jail and needed money to be released.

The 83-year-old Crescent Avenue woman said she received a phone call on April 17 around 3:30 p.m., stating that her grandson was at the Montgomery County Court in Norristown, and that he needed money “due to a case against him,” according to police.

The impersonator told Rogers that his public defender, John Myers, would be in contact with her to give her the information on how to get him the money, police said.

The victim called her daughter after hanging up with the impersonator, and she was told that her grandson was not at county court, police said.

There is no John Myers working in the public defenders office, according to police, who told the victim not to give out any personal information over the phone.
