Massive Conshohocken Steel Mill Up For Sale In 'Generational' Listing
The 66-acre site, whose operations "idled" in May, is shut down for good. The property's sale could reshape the Schuylkill River waterfront.

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — The site of a former steel plant in Conshohocken has hit the real estate market in a move that could potentially reshape the future of the Schuylkill River waterfront in Montgomery County.
The 66-acre site was home to the former Cleveland-Cliffs Conshohocken facility, located on 900 Conshohocken Road. The plant "idled" operations in early May, leading to the loss of more than 100 jobs, and at the time it appeared the move was possibly temporary. Nothing was heard about the future of the plant for months, however, and now it appears that it has closed for good.
It's not clear exactly what type of development may come to the site, but realtors say it's suitable for a wide range of uses.

"The property represents a generational opportunity to acquire one of the largest and most strategically located redevelopment parcels in the Greater Philadelphia region," the listing by realtor Binswanger reads. "Zoned Heavy Industrial (HI) and offering direct rail access, an on-site substation, and multiple heavy-capacity cranes, the property is ideally suited for advanced manufacturing, logistics, data centers, and large-scale mixed-use redevelopment.
The property has around 1 million square feet of existing industrial infrastructure.

Binswanger said they expect the bidding to be "competitive."
"900 Conshohocken Road offers unmatched access, visibility, and infrastructure in one of the tightest industrial markets in the state," Binswanger's Chris Pennington said in a statement. "Whether you're a manufacturer seeking robust power and logistics or a developer looking to reimagine a historic riverfront campus, this site checks every box. We're excited to help the seller identify the highest and best use buyer through this process."
Each bid will be evaluated on a range of factors, including offer price, the closing timeline, the buyer's track record, and other contingencies, Binswanger said.
The Conshohocken plant had about 115 employees, according to company data. The "idle," though announced in May, officially began on June 30.
In addition to the Conshohocken plant, Cleveland-Cliffs also closed its Steelton plant in Dauphin County and its facility in Riverdale, Illinois. About 1,000 jobs were lost altogether between the three sites.
The closures are due to declining demand for its products, the company said in a statement at the time.
