Piercing Pagoda, With Roots in Plymouth Meeting, Gets Rebrand

The jewelry staple, found in malls nationwide, recently got rebranded. It's first kiosk opened at the Plymouth Meeting Mall in 1972.

PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA — Piercing Pagoda, that recognizable jewelry staple in shopping malls far and wide, has gotten a name change and rebranding.

The company is now going by Banter by Piercing Pagoda, according to a recent report in Forbes.

Signet is the parent company of the chain jewelry kiosk, which has locations at malls across the country. It's first location opened back in 1972 at the Plymouth Meeting Mall right here in eastern Montgomery County, according to the Forbes piece.

According to the Forbes report, Piercing Pagoda was founded in 1969 by Bethlehem, Pa. jeweler and philanthropist Bernard Cohen, who desired to open a jewelry business strictly dedicated to the selling of earrings.

The original name came about to honor Bethlehem's Japanese sister city, Tondabayashi, and was inspired by the architecture of the Plymouth Meeting Mall, which reminded Cohen of a pagoda, the Forbes report states.
