Service and Devotion Monument Coming to Plymouth

Funding efforts are underway for the memorial; it is a 'project for the whole community,' council says.

A Service and Devotion Monument will be built in Community Center Park, and the funding efforts are underway for the project, according to Plymouth Township.

“Always in my heart, I felt that this township should have something to recognize the very good people who devoted their time and efforts, and even their lives, for our country,” said local veteran George Gunning, Jr., who was the driving force behind the monument, according to the Plymouth Township Spring Newsletter.

The monument will include eight pillars to honor the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, law enforcement, fire and ambulance, and there will be a special area dedicated to fallen officer Bradley Fox.

Individual tributes can be displayed through purchased plaques, bricks and pavers.

The project is being designed by Richard Powers, a local architect with the Norristown-based firm Seiler & Drury.

According Plymouth Council President Sheldon Simpson, fundraising efforts have begun and donations are being accepted from businesses, corporations and residents.

“Hopefully our residents will get behind it and support this,” Simpson said.  “It’s a great cause, not just for our military, but for our volunteers and paid staff at the police, ambulance and fire departments who dedicate themselves every day to the residents of the township.”

Bricks, plaques and pavers can be purchased for loved ones who served, and all monetary and in-kind contributions are appreciated for this project.
