Thousands of Conshohocken residents and visitors pass by this sign every day, marking the spot where the first Bell Telephone Exchange was installed in Conshohocken in 1883.

Exchange stations were necessary in the early days of telecommunications, before area codes were used.

The system was installed in Harry's Drug store, on the corner of Fayette Street and East First Avenue, which is now occupied by Jimmy John's.
