Rising Population Has Whitemarsh Officials Preparing

Anyone that grew up in the area can tell you that Whitemarsh Township has grown immensely in the past few decades. Sprouting new housing developments, increased traffic and busy business hubs have totally changed the surroundings.

The look of the community has transitioned greatly, and so must its government, because, as Bob Dylan once said, "times they are a'changin."

According to a Colonial News report, Whitemarsh Township is preparing for that now.

The township's board of supervisors recently ordered the conduction a population study to examine its growth of residental areas. In the past 50 years, the population has tripled, per the findings. According to the township's study, that trend will continue.

"The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission forecasts that there will be approximately 1,628 new residents in Whitemarsh arriving between 2000 and 2030," said the Colonial News report.

According to City Data, the current population of the township is 16,702 people.

The township has stated that it will prepare for the growing population by staying on top of issues such as housing developments, subdivisions of land and stormwater management concerns.

"The supervisors are also looked to protect their future land by adopting the 2012 Montgomery County hazard mitigation plan," Colonial News said. "This plan allows the township to apply for certain grants that may help with storm-water management issues."
