Wordsworth Academy Named ‘No Place for Hate’

The school completed three projects before receiving the honor from the Anti-Defamation League.

Wordsworth Academy in Fort Washington was named a “No Place for Hate” school by the Anti-Defamation League on Tuesday, and will now have a banner to show the distinction.

The school, which provides services for youth with emotional, behavioral and academic challenges, had to complete three projects to demonstrate understanding and commitment to building a safe school community.

“We all participated in a lesson on hate, made a diversity quilt and partook in a creativity challenge,” said Sam Steiner at an assembly.  “At a time when tragedies are affecting our country, we need to make more effort in creating safe places.”

The group recited the No Place for Hate Pledge: “I promise to do my best to treat everyone fairly, I promise to do my best to be kind to everyone – even if they do not like me,  If I see someone being hurt or bullied, I will tell a teacher, everyone should be able to feel safe and happy at school, I want our school to be a No Place for Hate.”

Jeremy Bennett, of the Anti-Defamation League, congratulated the group on their “No Place for Hate” dedication, saying that they needed to take what they’ve learned with them over the summer.

"Your heart and your mind need to be no place for hate," said Bennett.
