Flooding Could Close Pottstown Roads

Local firefighters anticipate the need to close roads around Memorial Park in the borough this afternoon due to an overflow of Manatawny Creek.

Local fire officials expect Manatawny Creek to swell and overflow into the King Street area in the borough, said Dave Devlin, news and sports director at WPAZ 1370 AM in Pottstown.

If the creek floods the area, residents should be prepared for road closings.

The Schuylkill River is running high but is basically in good shape, said AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Alan Reppert on Sunday. The Manatawny, which connects to the river, is much smaller and will have a tougher time processing additional water caused by Hurricane Irene, he said.

"The (Schuylkill River) is going to be below flood stage ... It's a wide river," he said. "But (the Manatawny) could flood ... The creek has a smaller area that it's flowing through."

Pottstown, which already broke a water saturation record for August, received another 5.95 inches of rain between 3 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday, Reppert said.

"That is likely to cause flooding and also some problems with trees and power lines being down," he said.

The good news?

Sunday afternoon and evening should be clear and warm. Monday will be sunny and reach 80 degrees, he said.

"It looks like things will be drying out ... probably by tonight," Reppert said.
