Kohl's Announces Mass Closures, Including Eastern PA Store

A Kohl's in Chester County is among "underperforming" locations that will shut down, the company announced.

POTTSTOWN, PA — Kohl's department store is shutting down 27 locations nationwide as part of a cost-cutting measure, including a Chester County location, the company announced.

The "Pottstown" store, which is within a Pottstown zip code but is actually on 351 W. Schuylkill Road in South Pottstown, is the only Pennsylvania store impacted by the announcement.

"We always take these decisions very seriously," Tom Kingsbury, Kohl's chief executive officer, said in a statement. "As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams."

The closures will go into effect by April 2025.

Kohl's said it told employees in Pottstown and other impacted stores of the closures and offered them a "competitive" severance package or invited them to apply to openings at other branches.

Beyond stating that Pottstown was among its underperforming locations, Kohl's did not elaborate further on the closures.

There are some 1,150 Kohl's stores across the country.

Editor's note: a previous version of the story incorrectly stated that this Kohl's is in Montgomery County, because Kohl's calls it their Pottstown store and the mailing address is Pottstown. However, the store is actually across the Schuylkill River in South Pottstown, which is Chester County.
