The holidays can be a difficult time for those struggling to recover from alcoholism. Holiday celebrations with family, friends and coworkers often involve at least some alcohol, and the temptation to indulge can be very powerful.

SEPIA, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Intergroup Association for Alcoholics Anonymous, is based in Philadelphia but serves the needs of those recovering from the disease in the Montgomery County area.

The support team at Sepia used its December newsletter to help its members get through the holiday season with twelve tips.

  1. Add more AA meetings to your routine

  2. Be a host to AA newcomers

  • Keep AA numbers with you at all times

  • Find out about local AA holiday celebrations (and go)

  • Skip any drinking occasion you are worried about

  • If you go to a party with drinks, take candy

  • Don’t stay out late

  • Visit a house of worship

  • Stay busy

  • Do not succumb to holiday temptations (one day at a time)

  • Enjoy the holidays’ true beauty

  • AA members know the 12th step
