ShopRite, MCIU Partner to Teach Job Skills

Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU) Transition Program is pleased to announce a new job site for its students. As a result, MCIU now operates twenty-eight work sites throughout Montgomery County to help students with disabilities learn employment skills.

On February 22nd, the transition program started a new partnership with ShopRite in East Norriton.  Eleven transition students from Abington, Spring-Ford, and Upper Dublin, Methacton, North Penn, Perkiomen Valley, Pottsgrove, Souderton and Upper Merion School Districts work daily at ShopRite.  Transition students participated in video training regarding their various responsibilities and are working with mentors in the various departments of ShopRite. Their job tasks include bagging food items, restocking customer returns, and watering the plants in the floral department. On Wednesdays, which is Senior Citizen Discount Day at ShopRite, the students help customers load their groceries into their cars. 

“The students will be learning employment skills, including problem solving, social communication, responsibility, and customer relations. We are grateful to ShopRite for partnering with us to provide this great educational opportunity,” said Sally Bishop, MCIU Transition Teacher. 

The MCIU provides a continuum of services and opportunities to support students with disabilities to prepare for the world of work, partnering with area businesses which provide an array of volunteer and paid employment opportunities for the 100+ Montgomery County students who receive transition support on a daily basis.
