AI Coming To Lancaster Avenue Traffic Signals

Radnor Township said AI traffic adaptive system will be installed on traffic signals along a portion of Lancaster Avenue.

RADNOR TOWNSHIP, PA — Radnor Township is getting on the artificial intelligence train by moving forward with a new AI traffic adaptive system on traffic signals.

The Radnor Township Board of Commissioners awarded a project to Lenni Electric to install the system on signals on Lancaster Avenue from Villanova Center to Airdale Road.

Officials said the traffic adaptive system has been successful at reducing congestion at the Blue Route Interchange, and this marks the second and final phase of the project, which started at Radnor Chester Road through the Blue Route Interchange.

This system uses AI technology to detect the presence of vehicles and then computes real time data of changing traffic flow, coordinating signals accordingly.

When the final phase of implementation is complete, the township will start using AI traffic adaptive technology on all the signals from St. Davids Road east to Airdale Road.

Come Tuesday, the project contractor will perform preliminary work prior to installation of the new hardware and software. There will be no impact to traffic at this stage of the project.

Traffic impact reports will be available on the township website and social media accounts.
