Reading City Council adopts 2026 budget with 6% property tax hike (readingeagle.com) — Reading homeowners will see a 6% property tax increase next year after City Council narrowly approved the 2026 budget and trimmed the mayor’s proposed 9% hike. Council cut several items, including a new budget analyst position, community engagement funds, and an outdoor skating rink, prompting warnings from city officials about long-term financial stability and potential impacts on services. 
2. Fugitive sought in 2021 drug-related killing in Reading (readingeagle.com) — U.S. marshals and Berks County authorities are searching for a Reading man accused in a 2021 drug-related killing in the city who fled the courthouse when he realized he’d be taken back into custody. Officials say he may still be in southeastern Pennsylvania and are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Alert Berks County anonymously.
3. Minor league report: Penguins, Sergei Murashov shut out Wolf Pack (triblive.com) — A recent ECHL matchup at Santander Arena in Reading saw the Wheeling Nailers’ four-game win streak snapped in a tight 3-2 loss to the Reading Royals, despite two points from Logan Pietila. The broader minor-league roundup also highlights a shutout win for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and notes both teams’ upcoming games.
4. New Deadline for PA Property Tax and Rent Rebate Comes Soon (bctv.org) — Pennsylvania homeowners and renters, including those in Reading, now have until Dec. 31 to apply for expanded 2024 property tax and rent rebates, with maximum payments increased to $1,000. The income limits will also rise with inflation going forward, potentially making 175,000 more residents eligible, especially older adults and people with disabilities living on fixed incomes.
