5 Things to Know This Week: Bridge Closing, Meetings and Spin-a-thon

Patch gives you a rundown of what's going on around the community.

1. Bridge Closing

The long-term closing of the nearby Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge begins today, March 4. Expect delays traveling in the area of the Sewickley Bridge, which has been designated the alternate detour through November. Sewickley police plan to provide traffic control for the next five days.

2. Sewickley Zoning and Planning Commission

Sewickley's zoning hearing board meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and the planning commission meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday in council chambers at the municipal building. Click here for the planning or zoning board meeting agendas.

3. Battle of the Books

High school Battle of the Books teams will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 6Β at Sewickley Academy. The event begins at 6 with pizza and a Skype visit with Lish McBride, author of Hold Me Closer, Necromancer. The battle begins at 7 p.m.

4. Akron District Conference

St. Matthews AME Zion Church will be hosting the three-day Akron District Conference with a totalΒ of 11 churches--pastors, delegates and district officers--attending. The conference begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7 with the annual Communion Service. The Rev. Robert S. Hickey, Sr., pastor of St. Matthews, is the presiding elder.

St. Matthews invites the public to attend anytime. At 7 p.m. Friday, a welcome service will take place, welcoming pastors and delegates to the Sewickley community. The public is welcome to attend and greet the visitors.

5. Doug Millar Memorial Spin-a-thon

On Sunday, March 10 the Sewickley Valley YMCA is hosting the Doug Millar Memorial Spin-a-thon from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Get a great workout, have fun, receive an event gift and enter to win prizes.
