Edward Payson Hawes

The viewing will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 at Copeland's Funeral Home in Sewickley.

Edward Payson Hawes, born April 13, 1921, died October 15, 2012, of heart failure.

He graduated from Moon High School in 1939, and attended the University of Pittsburgh for three years, served honorably as a Master Sgt. in the Signal Corps in Oahu, HA, for four years, graduated from Westminster College with a BA degree in 1947 majoring in math and psychology.

He received a National Science Foundation Grant to attend Boston College and earned 24 extra credits in mathematics. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1956 with a Master of Education degree.

Mr. Hawes took over tutoring for his Father, Edward Prince Hawes, in the Carnot Country Day School, and changed the title to the Sewickley School of Tutoring in 1958. He also taught at Moon High School for 23 years. He resigned from Moon High School in 1971, and began teaching mathematics at Sewickley Academy, where he taught until 1978.

Mr. Hawes greatly enjoyed being a volunteer tutor of Latin I students for the past several years.

Mr. Hawes is survived by his loving wife, Joann Gilmore Dye Hawes, son, William David Hawes (wife, Mary Hawes), daughter, Christine Diane (husband Regis H. Cassidy), and daughter Sheryl Ann (husband Richard E. Conrad), plus grandchildren Christopher Hawes Conrad, Sean Christian Conrad, Chelsea Conrad, Regis Cassidy, Jr., Trinity Ann Cassidy Byrne(husband David Byrne), and great-grandchildren Kiera Elizabeth Byrne, Brian Patrick Byrne, Leah Isabella Byrne, Chloe Friend Cassidy, and Paige Makayla Friend Cassidy.

The viewing will be at Copeland's Funeral Home in Sewickley from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18. The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Sewickley. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity
