Sewickley Volunteers Still Needed to Participate in Cancer Research Study

There are 32 individuals enrolled in Sewickley, but at least 100 are needed.

As it celebrates 100 years, the American Cancer Society is looking for more Sewickley residents to help in the fight against cancer by joining a historic research study.

“By joining this study, people can literally help us save lives, giving future generations more time with families and friends, more memories, more celebrations, and more birthdays,” said Sharon Stalter, Health Initiatives representative. “As the official sponsor of birthdays, celebrating our own 100th birthday in 2013, we can think of no more valuable contribution to the cancer fight.”

The American Cancer Society recently held its Sewickley kickoff for the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3), a nationwide study to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmenta and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer.

Stalter said 32 Sewickley area residents are enrolled as champions, but at least 100 volunteers from Sewickley and surrounding areas are needed.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Americans to participate in lifesaving cancer research,” Stalter said. “We are excited to offer an opportunity for residents to make an appointment and enroll in the study at their convenience now through June."

At least 100 local residents are needed to help with the recruitment of 1,000 community participants for the CPS-3 study.

Researchers say CPS-3 holds the best hope of identifying new and emerging cancer risks. Its success depends on members of the community becoming involved.

Data from the study will be used to build on evidence from earlier cancer prevention studies, which began in the 1950s and involved hundreds of thousands of volunteers.

Sewickley Mayor Brian Jeffe recently presented a proclamation declaring the week of May 20 as "Cancer Prevention Week" in Sewickley.

The opportunity for local residents to enroll in the CPS-3 study will take place May 22 at the Sewickley Valley YMCA.

Signing up requires a one-time in-person 20 to 30 minute visit to read and sign a consent form, complete a survey, have your waist measured, and give a small non-fasting blood sample like what you’d do during a routine doctor visit.

Participants will also complete a more detailed survey at home and continue to receive periodic follow-up surveys every two to three years in the future that researchers will use to look for more clues to cancer’s causes.

To register, visit www.greaterpittsburghcps3.org or call 1-888-604-5888. For more information on other opportunities for involvement, call 412-919-1100.
