Wood Burner Ignites Blaze in Moon

Cochran Hose Co. joined firefighters from across the region responding to a Moon Township basement fire.

Embers from a basement wood burner ignited a fire Saturday that sent Cochran Hose Co. firefighters and other departments from across the region responding with mutual aid to Moon Township.

Moon Fire Chief John Scott said no one was injured in the blaze, which was contained to the basement of the home on Cherrington Lane in Moon.

The home's residents were away when the fire began shortly after 4 p.m., he said. The property is owned by Kurt and Jacquelyn Gottschalk, according to Allegheny County property records.

A neighbor who was watching the family's pets alerted authorities to the blaze.

Scott said the basement sustained moderate damage, much of it in a bedroom near the wood burner, he said.
