Sliding Vehicle Strikes, Kills Pittsburgh High School Student

A Pittsburgh teen died Friday after being struck by a vehicle that apparently slid on a slippery street.

PITTSBURGH, PA — A Carrick High School student was struck and killed Friday by a vehicle that apparently slid during a wintry weather outburst.

According to Pittsburgh Public Safety officials, police were called to the intersection of Brownsville Road and West Woodford Avenue at approximately 2:50 p.m.

Reportedly, a vehicle traveling down Brownsville Road had begun sliding before colliding with a pole. It continued sliding and struck the 17-year-old teen, who was standing on the sidewalk.

Pittsburgh EMS performed CPR and took the teen to the hospital in critical condition. She died a short time later.

School district officials said the victim was Carrick senior Ishara Kami, 17.

In a statement to the media, district officials said, "Ishara is described by staff as a beautiful student who had recently begun to come out of her shell. A student in the health tech program, she was known for her kind spirit, helpful nature, and the genuine care she showed to others. She was well loved by her peers, an all-around good student, and a true joy to have in class."

The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene.

The incident occurred during a snow squall alert in which the National Weather Service warned of the potential for black ice and flash freezes on local roads.

The investigation remains ongoing.
