1 Hurt After After Two Separate Crashes, Vehicle Fire On I-95 In Delco

Two crashes and a fire on Interstate 95 in Delaware County Monday morning led to major traffic impacts as drivers were snarled for hours.

UPLAND BOROUGH, PA — Authorities in Delaware County are looking for the driver of a vehicle that drove against traffic on Interstate 95 to avoid traffic from a crash and ended up crashing into several other vehicles.

The incident began at about 6 a.m. on Interstate 95 north near mile marker 5.4, Pennsylvania State Police said. As of 12:25 p.m., traffic on I-95 north has resumed but is moving at a crawl, PennDOT traffic cameras show.

A Honda Pilot tried to change lanes, but struck the side of a PepsiCo tractor trailer truck, sending the truck into the center barrier, police said. The truck caught fire after coming to a rest in the center lane and the Honda drove off, police said.

The striking driver who fled was later charged after turning himself into police in Media, while the truck's driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said.

Large chunks of the concrete center barrier were strewn about the highway as a result of the crash, forcing the highway to close for several hours as emergency crews responded.

Then, a short while later, a Hyundai Santa Cruz in an apparent attempt to get out of traffic caused by the crash and fire turned around on I-95 north and drove against traffic.

Police said in doing so, the Hyundai struck several other vehicles, including a Toyota RAV4 and a Jeep Cherokee. The Hyundai was unable to continue driving, and the driver abandoned the vehicle on the highway, police said.

No one was hurt in those crashes.
