Making roads safer for Springfield residents

Vision Zero makes a pledge to reduce traffic accidents to zero

Day and night, Delco residents leave our homes and hit the road to get to work or school. We share the roads and pavements with bikes, cars, trucks and buses as we traverse familiar routes around our neighborhoods. However, traffic safety is an issue in our County. In 2022, there were 54 traffic deaths in Delco, 20 of which were pedestrians.

Delaware County is taking a “Vision Zero” approach to traffic safety. What does this mean? It means that one traffic death is too many. The county is actively identifying ways that Delco residents can walk, bike, roll and walk safer. They are doing this by collecting traffic data, engaging with communities and running projects to improve safety.

There are 28 miles of “Corridors of Concern” in Delaware County. These roadways were identified as hot spots for serious and fatal crashes in Delaware County. Several of these roads are in Springfield township. You can check to see if you are walking or driving along these Corridors of Concern yourself here.

What can you do to help improve safety for our local community? Please fill out the county’s survey here. Your input will help guide a coordinated effort to improve mobility for all and keep people safe on our streets, sidewalks, and bikeways.

As a Springfield resident and one of the Vision Zero Safety Ambassadors for the County, I am collecting stories from my community via this survey to help craft the action plan and hopefully eventually make our roads safer. We would love to hear from you!
