Schoolhouse Center  at 600 Swarthmore Avenue in Folsom is a private non-profit Senior Center owned and operated by Senior Community Services. It is the closest Senior Center to Springfield and has many members from Springfield. Below are some of the regular events taking place at the Schoolhouse Center.

Food Pantry in Springfield

The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is open every Wednesday from 4:00PM to 7:00 PM -non-perishable food & toiletries.

Free Computer Tech Talk Group

Schoolhouse Center (600 Swarthmore Ave., Folsom) has  a new group for computer users who enjoy talking about computers.  This group is not a class nor does it replace a computer course.  Our goal is to provide a venue to learn from each other.  Bring your questions, bring your answers, bring your expertise and don’t forget a pad and pencil!  Free Wi Fi is available.  The Facilitator is Rich Conti. Schoolhouse Center Inviting Clergy and Human Service Providers to Free Training

On Thursday, October 17 from 6-8p.m., Schoolhouse Center (600 Swarthmore Ave., Folsom) is hosting a training on Creating Safe and Inclusive Services for LGBT  (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transvestite) older adults.  LGBT older adults are consistently underserved.  This thought provoking seminar will present information about the needs and concerns of LGBT older adults.  We will review suggested practices for creating LGBT inclusive environments.  This seminar is geared to local service providers, but also offers provides a wonderful opportunity to examine our own assumptions and thinking.   A light sandwich meal will be provided.  Space limited.  Advance registration is required.  The Facilitator is Ed Miller of William’s Way Senior Center.  There is no fee. Intro to Computers Class 

Schoolhouse Center (600 Swarthmore Ave., Folsom) has a class for those who wish to take the first level of  Computer Classes.  We will take it slow in this class, and teach you the basics of using a computer, including how to use the mouse, open applications, create an email account and use Windows.  The Instructor is : Beth White.  For more information call 610 237-8100.   The cost is only $20.00

Spaghetti Dinner

Enjoy a delicious spaghetti dinner at Schoolhouse Center (600 Swarthmore Ave., Folsom).  The menu is spaghetti & meatballs, mixed green salad, rolls, iced tea, lemonade, coffee and dessert.  This is a fundraiser for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)!  Don’t cook this night!  There will be a limited number of tickets available.  Advance tickets guaranteed, remaining tickets will be sold at the door. Book Reading/Signing

Author: Ron Giles

Schoolhouse Center (600 Swarthmore Ave., Folsom) is hosting a Book Reading/Signing.  Author, Ron Giles has written as a series of short stories, Locust and Wild Honey, will lead the reader to ghost, psychic, a hellhound and a mysterious ex-con with a tattoo on his forearm.  This story is a struggle between good and evil.  The author had a 35-yr commercial television career (winning seven regional Emmy’s) before turning to writing in 2008.  This is his fourth book.  To sign up for this free program, call 610 237-8100.  The program is Thursday, October 17 from 12:30 to 4:30pm.  Light refreshments will be served-  Reservation Needed

  

 ZUMBA

Schoolhouse Center (600 Swarthmore Ave., Folsom) is hosting a Zumba class!  This is a Latin inspired dance workout that combines salsa, meringue, reggae, hip hop, etc.  You will loose pounds and inches, that’s for sure!  Join this upbeat and enthusiastic instructor!  The Instructor is  Bridgett Bernhardt.  The group meets on Thursdays from 3-4p.m.    The course cost is $40.00.   For more information, call 610 237-8100

Creative Dance!

Schoolhouse Center (600 Swarthmore Ave., Folsom) is hosting a Creative Dance Class.  Have you heard that self-expression through music can positively impact memory and increase neural pathways in the brain?  Do you enjoy music and movement but shy away from choreographed dance classes?  Do you want to improve your balance, get in shape and have fun at the same time?  This class emphasizes self-guided movement through an appreciation of many genres of music.  The goal is to get a full-body workout through non-impact dance exercise, increasing balance and boosting brain power at the same time.  No dance experience necessary, and great for all fitness levels and abilities.  The instructor is  Bridget Bernhardt.  This class is only $40.00 and meets on Thursday   10/3-12/12  from  2:00-2:55 pm
