If you like Math, Wednesday was an interesting day for you. Especially if you attended one of Mrs. Kathy Iacobucci’s middle school math classes at Devon Preparatory School.
Since Wednesday was Pi day, as well as Albert Einstein’s birthday, Mrs. Iacobucci celebrated the day with a math lesson and a snack. “Pi Day is an international celebration of the number 3.1415, which, as most people know, is represented by the Greek letter pi (∏), one of the most important numbers in mathematics,” Mrs. Iacobucci explained. “Pi is the relationship of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. March 14 is the day of celebration every year for the simple reason the numbers used in representing the date- 3.14.”
To mark this day, Mrs. “I”, as she is known at Devon Prep, served slices of pie to her students all day long. She served apple pie, pumpkin pie, cheese pie, chocolate chip pie, Boston Cream pie and more. While the sixth, seventh and eighth graders ate their snack, they were also busy making a paper chain representing the irrational number Pi.

According to Mrs. I, “The number does not repeat and does not terminate. The colors in the chain represented the digits 0-9 i.e., Green - 0, Black - 1, Blue - 2, Pink - 3, Yellow - 4 and so on. By the end of the day the chain extended to over 900 links (digits) of Pi.” The end result will hang in Mrs. Iacobucci’s math room as a reminder that math can be both fun and filling.
