Berwyn Fire Company Awarded $1.5 Million State Grant

Plans call for construction a new station to replace the 93-year-old station on Bridge Street.

TREDYFFRIN TWP —The 93-year-old Berwyn Fire Compnay was awarded a $1.5 million state grant to support the construction of a new station at Bridge Avenue in Tredyffrin Township.

The fire department services Tredyffrin and Easttown townships.

“Berwyn Fire Company has a long tradition of serving two townships with large populations,” Fire Chief Eamon C. Brazunas said. “The first responder community is grateful to our state lawmakers for their commitment to bringing this money back to the district.”

Tredyffrin Township has a population of 29,461 and Easttown has a population of 10,646.

The grant was awarded by the Pennysylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.

It will go toward the $8 million total cost of the project, which also includes constructing a permanent substation in TredyffrinTownship to replace a temporary substation near the Gateway Shopping Center.

The new firehouse will feature four apparatus bays, four private bedrooms and bathrooms, a common bedroom, and a laundry room.

In addition, it will have a kitchen, fitness room, office space, radio room, emergency management coordination room, and additional storage space.

Tredyffrin and Easttown board of supervisors last year approved providing $4.5 million toward the project. Private donors are also contributing to the project.

The fire company expressed gratitude to these elected officials and their staff for advocating for project:

  • State Rep. Melissa L. Shusterman - 157th District
  • State Rep. Kristine C. Howard - 167th District
  • Chester County commissioners

“I’ve had many conversations with Tredyffrin and the Berwyn Fire Company since I took office in 2019 about funding for a new station.” Shusterman said. “I am ecstatic that we will be bringing $1.5 million in taxpayer money back to the district.”

History

Founded in 1894 the Berwyn Fire Company is a non-profit organization that provides fire suppression, rescue, EMS, and fire prevention services for the people who live, work, and travel through Tredyffrin and Easttown townships.

Its combined 70 volunteers, 10 full-time employees, and 28 part-time employees respond to more than 2,150 ambulance calls and 900 fire calls annually.

In addition to emergency calls, its emergency first responders spend approximately 1,000 hours per year training to prepare for scenarios when every second counts.
